Endorsements
This campaign is not accepting endorsements.
That is not an oversight. It is a decision about what a judge should be: not just nonpartisan, but apolitical. A judge answers to the law and to the people in the courtroom, not to a party, an officeholder, or a business.
The reasoning
Why Ben is declining every endorsement, from every side.
Judicial races in Minnesota are nonpartisan: candidates appear on everyone’s general election ballot, just without a party label. Ben believes the bar should be higher than that. A judgeship is not a political office with the labels removed. It is an apolitical one, and endorsements pull it the wrong way.
Endorsements read as affiliation.
An endorsement from a political party, an elected official, or a business is read, fairly or not, as a signal of the candidate’s personal politics. Every person who walks into a courtroom deserves confidence that the judge holds no side before the case begins.
They can compromise the work.
When an endorser, their organization, or their interests later appear in court, the judge faces recusal questions that never needed to exist. Declining endorsements now protects the integrity of every case later.
A judge answers to the law.
Accepting support from political or business interests creates a debt, even an implied one. Ben wants to arrive at the bench owing nothing to anyone, free to follow the law, the facts, and the record in every case.
“Our judiciary is not political. The inside of a courtroom is where we must have people who are willing to see others as human and treat each person with respect.”
